Mathematical explorations in contemporary Statistics

The use in the analysis of statistical models of unusual mathematical techniques is the main theme on the meeting. Differential geometry has been employed since the influential papers by Rao, Chentsov, Efron and Amari to interpret and generalise notions related to exponential statistical models. This lead to the branch of statistics called information geometry. More recently computational commutative algebra has been used for the analysis of finite state space models, for example contingency tables and design of experiments, leading to algebraic statistics. The newest applications of algebraic statistics are to the continuous case. Professor Giovanni Pistone has been one of the few researchers to realize the relevance of both differential geometry and commutative algebra in statistics. His fundamental contributions to information geometry and algebraic statistics are well known. His 65th birthday gives us the opportunity to highlight these themes. Other research interests of Professor Pistone and topics of the workshop include industrial statistics, stochastic integration and Malliavin calculus, probabilistic models and stochastic differential equations. |
