SMID is the first undergraduate degree in statistics in Italy administered in a Faculty of Science. This is frequent abroad where research and teaching in Statistics and Mathematics are closely related.

The undergraduate degree SMID belongs to the ministerial class named  Mathematical Science.

The demand of Mathematical Statisticians is expanding in a diverse range of working environments. This increase stems from the realization that a rigorous treatment of scientific information and extrapolation of information from the available data are indispensable in the modern business world and are a guarantee of quality.

More and more research in Statistics uses methods from Mathematics and increases the relevance of its role in the science and cultural worlds. The importance of statistics is outlined in the following sentence by David Mumford, one of the greatest contemporary mathematicians:

"Probability and Statistics will come to be viewed as the natural tools to use in mathematical as well as scientific modeling. The intellectual world as a whole will come to view logic as a beautiful elegant idealization but to view statistics as the standard way in which we reason and think."
